1&1 Green Initiatives with CEO Oliver Mauss

Why does 1&1 pay attention to and try to resolve sustainability initiatives?
As a Web host, a substantial amount of energy is required to maintain such reliable services for our customers. However, we are unsettled by the potential for producing a large carbon footprint on the environment. Knowing that the energy produced by data centers is a growing concern for many consumers, we began exploring possible solutions for all of 1&1’s data centers world-wide. Other environmental issues like Global Warming, water scarcity, and air quality are increasingly becoming reasons for concern, so we feel our efforts to be energy efficient can at least work towards bettering the planet and our own well-being.

How do you judge the success of the various sustainability initiatives?
As a company, we can only judge our own success by the initiatives we are putting in place. Measuring the amount of energy used in our data center and matching it with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) is one way in which we can be sure of our green efforts. We especially know that our work to control our data center’s impact is successful when we hear how our data compares to daily energy consumption. Outside of 1&1’s initiatives though, the best we can do is reinforce the importance of being green and count overall success by the number of companies following in footsteps like ours.

What types of things are you doing related to energy?
Since 1&1’s first data center projects, we have always worked hard to lower power consumption. The power bill is one of the largest parts of our operational expenses for such data centres, so reducing power consumption is a win-win issue for us. 1&1 was the first web host to power its data centres worldwide with ‘green energy’. In the USA, 1&1 Internet also developed a partnership with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF). In 2008, we started purchasing RECs through the BEF in order to offset our US data center’s energy usage. In addition to that, all of our data centers use highly efficient equipment and power supplies with less than 20 per cent heat loss. We install energy-saving coolers that use the outside temperature for cooling and thus significantly reduce power consumption. 1&1 also uses low-energy components within all its servers.

What types of things are you doing related to water?
As mentioned earlier, we purchase RECs through the BEF. The majority of the RECs are sourced from the Bowersock Mills and Power Company’s hydroelectric facility in Lawrence, Kansas. This hydroelectric facility is certified low impact by the Low Impact Hydro Institute (LIHI).

You are purchasing renewable energy certificates-- tell us about that initiative.
Our strong partnership with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation has helped us understand and effectively utilize the RECs that we purchase through them. The clean energy from the RECs has helped us prevent 30,000 tons of CO2 emissions from entering the air. In other words, 30,000 tons of CO2 is enough to power 2,090 US homes for one year. This is an improvement that we take much pride in and look forward to matching each year upon purchasing more RECs. It is an initiative that will help us work towards a better environment.

What, if anything, are you doing to encourage your employees or customers to embrace sustainability?
1&1 employees are proud to take part in our corporate ‘green’ initiatives. At each 1&1 headquarters, only reusable kitchen items are used as opposed to paper or plastic cups, utensils and plates. We also actively participate in the community recycling program in each of the six countries we are present in. Billing statements and other customer correspondence such as welcome packages are conducted electronically via email which saves a significant amount of paper each year.
We also wanted to share this passion with our customers, so we designed a logo representing our partnership with the BEF that all of our customers can display on their websites. By using this image, their clients will rest assured that they too are conducting business with an environmentally responsible company.

What advice do you have for other hosting companies that are just starting to pay attention to sustainability? Where should they start?
If I had to give any piece of advice, it would be to research different options for Green opportunities. Find whatever partnerships, projects or initiatives best suit the scale of their operation and take the necessary action. Groups like the BEF are great to work with because they provide options that can help conserve and offset used energy. Web hosts have always been by their very nature energy-hungry companies. However, nowadays this is something that can be transformed for the better with the help of such organizations.
